Peugeot releases details of its iOn electric car

Peugeot has released details of an electric car called the iOn that it will sell starting at the end of next year.

Based on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the four-door minicar will debut at the upcoming Frankfurt auto show.

Th iOn can travel 130km on a full electric charge. Its lithium-ion batteries can be fully recharged in six hours or up to 80 percent of their capacity within 30 minutes. Peugeot says the car is particularly suited for use in urban areas.

On Sept. 4, PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Mitsubishi announced that they had signed a contract for Mitsubishi to supply PSA with electric cars based on the Japanese carmaker's i-MiEV, which went on sale in Japan in June.

Citroen will sell a version of the i-MiEV. PSA aims to sell 25,000 units of the electric minicar annually.

PSA aims to enhance its growing range of low-emission vehicles with the iOn and its Citroen counterpart. Citroen is expected to unveil its version in Frankfurt.

The French automaker will launch its diesel-electric hybrid technology in 2011 on the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 and Citroen DS5 HYbrid4. A plug-in diesel hybrid is due in 2012.
