UAW makes a good pick in Blanchard for Chrysler's board

Kudos go to Ron Gettelfinger and the UAW because Jim Blanchard was a stunningly good choice to represent the UAW’s VEBA on the Chrysler board of directors.

I was secretly concerned the union might select some slug or a political hack.

Yes, I know Blanchard is a politician. He was ambassador to Canada during the Clinton administration and before that he was a Democratic governor of Michigan.

But 30 years ago as a young congressman from a Detroit suburb, Blanchard was an important sparkplug in Congress when the old Chrysler Corp. got the federal loan guarantees.

Blanchard is bright, politically savvy and as a bonus he also knows Chrysler, its people and its history.

OK. That’s one down and how many to go?
