Better time for Avantime?

While running errands last week I saw a beautifully maintained Renault Avantime.

The car is a rare sight because it was a major flop. Renault stopped making it in 2002 after sales that year slipped to 5,100 units.

The Avantime ranked No. 5 on the list of 10 ugliest cars produced since 1996. The list was created in 2006 by my former Automotive News Europe colleague, Jesse Snyder, who added, "Everybody looked at it and recognized it was a two-door minivan."

My initial reaction to seeing the Avantime out in the wild was: That's different.

I liked that it stood out against the other cars on the road and wondered whether it would have survived if it arrived in a couple years with a few changes.

My change list would start with two more doors.Renault's much maligned Avantime
