VW gets 13,000 German orders for new Polo

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Volkswagen has got roughly 13,000 orders in Germany for its new Polo subcompact car prior to the market launch, VW said in a statement on Monday.

Small cars like the Polo have been in great demand since Germany began subsidising automobile purchases with 2,500 euros ($3,402) as long as buyers scrap their old cars.

General Motors' unit Opel's Eisenach and Zaragoza plants have been pumping out rival Corsa subcompacts at full capacity to satisfy customers.

Production of the five-door VW Polo was scheduled to begin at the end of March and the vehicle will hit the market in Germany starting in the last week of June. Two weeks later it will be sold across mainland Europe.

Its launch is VW's most important since last autumn's roll-out of the sixth generation of the flagship VW Golf hatchback.
