Ford’s electric van will have European roots

DETROIT-- Ford Motor's new electric van, announced as part of a turnaround plan submitted to Congress this month, will come from the European-developed Transit line, CEO Alan Mulally said.

The van is aimed at commercial fleets and will be available in 2010, Mulally told reporters yesterday at the automaker's product-development center in suburban Detroit.

A Ford insider said it will be a version of the Transit Connect delivery vehicle, the smallest member of the Transit van line. A gasoline-powered Transit Connect will go on sale in the United States next summer.

At next month's Detroit auto show, Ford plans to reveal more details about the electric Transit Connect and an electric sedan to go on sale in 2011.
