Ford's Mulally will drive to Washington in an Escape Hybrid

DETROIT – Ford Motor CEO Alan Mulally will drive to congressional hearings in Washington, D.C., this week in a Ford Escape Hybrid.

Mulally plans to leave Detroit on Tuesday to make the 9-hour drive, Ford spokesman Mike Moran said. Mulally and the heads of General Motors and Chrysler plan to ask Senate and House lawmakers for emergency federal loans designed to keep the domestic auto companies afloat.

The decision to drive comes two weeks after the CEOs of the Detroit 3 automakers attracted widespread criticism for traveling in separate corporate jets to an earlier round of congressional testimony.

Moran acknowledged that the criticism played a role in this week's travel plan. "Being an auto company, the alternative is to drive," he said.

After the earlier hearings, Ford said it is considering selling its fleet of five corporate jets.
