BMW opens purchasing office in Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- The BMW Group today opened a regional purchasing office for Latin America here.

BMW intends to seek business with companies across the region and strengthen alliances with its suppliers, the automaker said in a statement.

BMW said it has more than 80 suppliers in Mexico. This year those suppliers are expected to export parts worth more than $900 million, the company said.

BMW aims to work with more than 100 suppliers in Latin America for its assembly plants in the United States and Europe.

Mexico's location and its free-trade agreements with most regions of the world helped persuade the automaker to place the regional office there, BMW said.

Gerd Dressler, BMW Group's managing director in Mexico, said that country has become a "major source of high-technology parts."
