Europe should consider copying U.S. plans to offer carmakers low-interest loans to invest in environmentally-friendly technology, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said.
U.S.-based carmakers will be offered $25 billion in low-interest financing for adapting their manufacturing processes and product lines to new environmental criteria.
"I have no idea if Nissan will be able to benefit from it or by how much," Ghosn said at the Paris auto show. "But when you take a look at the financial situation in the market today, it is a good idea."
Ghosn said the European Union could "get inspiration" from the U.S. plan "if they want to get serious about helping the industry."
He added: "It is good to push us to have low emission cars and to have zero emission cars," Ghosn said, but government should also "lay down the financial means that will allow us to do it."
The auto industry is not seeking subsidies or incentives, Ghosn said, but rather "peace of mind" over the sustainability of long-term financing.
