Honda falls 1.6% while Nissan rises 8.5%

DETROIT -- With weak car sales and worse pickup and SUV sales, General Motors said today its light vehicle sales fell an unadjusted 26.1 percent in July to 233,340. GM's car sales were down 12.1 percent to 105,335. Light truck sales fell 35.4 percent to 129,849. There were few bright spots except for GM's crossovers and the popular Chevrolet Malibu -- sales of which rose by 78.6 percent. Meanwhile, American Honda Motor Co., which seemed almost bulletproof in recent months, posted an unadjusted 1.6 percent sales decline. Its relatively strong Honda-brand car sales couldn't offset weak pickup and SUV sales and a poor performance by Acura. Nissan Motor Co., though, showed strong sales last month and posted an unadjusted 8.5 percent sales increase, to 95,319. It managed to increase pickup truck and SUV sales 18.3 percent, largely on the strength of the Frontier and Xterra. Nissan's car sales gained only 2.4 percent. Automotive News does not adjust its figures for the number of sales day in a month. |
