Toyota sales up 2.2%, but may lower 2008 target

TOKYO -- Toyota has so far beat the global slump with a sales increase of 2.2 percent to 4,817,941 vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2008.

But the world's biggest automaker may still end up cutting its full-year target.

Toyota will trim its full-year goal to around 9.5 million vehicles, from an earlier forecast of 9.85 million, according to Japan's Nikkei business daily. The downward revision was triggered by worse than expected performance in North America, Japan and Europe, it said.

Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco said the company reviews its full-year numbers every July, but could not give further details.

Toyota's first-half performance puts it on pace to miss its 9.85 million goal. The figures were offered just before General Motors was announce its results for January-June.

Toyota's results count retail sales and include figures for Lexus, Scion, Hino and Daihatsu. The company offered no regional breakdown.

From April-June , Toyota's sales climbed 1.8 percent to 2,406,583 vehicles, from 2,364,779 units in the same period a year earlier.
