New Mazda6 price: $19,220

The 2009 Mazda6
Mazda this year has sold about half as many of its Mazda6 sedans compared with the company’s volume leader, the Mazda3.

Despite the car’s standing in the lineup, Jim O’Sullivan, CEO of Mazda North American Operations, says the new Mazda6 is “the most important new vehicle Mazda has launched in a decade.”

On Tuesday, July 15, Mazda said it will price the four-cylinder version of the 2009 Mazda6 at $19,220. A V-6 version will start at $24,800. Both prices include shipping.

The Mazda6 will be available to dealers in August, the automaker said.

“Bringing any new car to market at a competitive price has always been critical, but seldom more so than today,” O’Sullivan said in a statement. “Customers are looking for that rare combination of style, dynamics, economy and a great price, and the all-new 2009 Mazda6 delivers on all levels.”

The Mazda6 is the only car the company manufactures in the United States. The sedan is made at a plant in Flat Rock, Mich., south of Detroit -- a joint venture between Mazda and Ford Motor Co.

In the first half of the year, sales of the Mazda6 totaled 33,063 units, up 1.2 percent from the same period in 2007. During that period, the automaker sold 61,475 Mazda3s, down 1.8 percent from 2007.
