Honda will unveil sports car at London show

LONDON -- Honda will unveil a lightweight sports car concept at the London auto show on July 22.

The two-seat concept is called the OSM. The concept is designed to be fuel-efficient and low in CO2 emissions. OSM stands for Open Study Model.

The concept was styled at Honda's r&d center in Offenbach, Germany. Honda did not release technical details about the model or its likely powertrain.

At the Tokyo show in October 2007, Honda unveiled the CR-Z concept for a lightweight hybrid-engine coupe and that will enter series production.

Honda spokesman Steve Kirk did not say if the OSM study was related to the production CR-Z, which is due in 2009.

"At present the OSM is just a design study, a clay model," Kirk said. "It is definitely not confirmed for production at the moment."

Kirk said the OSM would fit in with Honda's plans for a greener product range if it is approved for production.

He said it would not be a successor for the S2000 high-performance rear-wheel-drive roadster.

Kirk said the OSM has certain similarities with the CR-Z. "The original brief for the CR-Z was for a low-emission, lightweight sports car," he said.

Honda uses the same words to describe the new OSM.

The choice of London to unveil the OSM may be strategic for Honda because the UK is one of the world's biggest markets for open-topped sports cars.
