The 2009 Chevrolet Traverse, the brandís key entry in crossovers this year, will go on sale in September for $28,990 for the base LS trim line.

That is almost the same price as the cheapest Ford Flex ($28,995), which will go head-to-head with the Traverse. The Flex went on sale in June.

Starting prices for the other two Traverse trim lines are $31,545 for the LT and $39,810 for the LTZ. All prices include shipping.

The Traverse is the fourth crossover to be built on GMís Lambda platform. The others are the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook.

In May, sales of the Enclave rose, while sales of the other two models slumped along with much of the rest of GMís lineup.

The crossover segment is growing as pickup and SUV sales plummet. Crossovers are roomier than cars but use less fuel than heavier vehicles.
