FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) -- BMW said it plans to invest more than $1 billion in its operations in the United States, including a previously announced $750 million investment at its factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The company said it will spend $100 million to expand its U.S. headquarters in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey.

The remaining $170 million will by the end of this year go toward to new regional parts distribution centers in Pennsylvania and Illinois, the German carmaker said in a statement.

The company previously said it plans to invest $750 million in expanding its factory in Spartanburg, increasing production capacity to 240,000 units from 160,000 by 2012.
