Pump prices holding steady

Gasoline prices largely held steady over the weekend, with pump prices for regular unleaded averaging $2.77 a gallon today, unchanged from Friday, Oct. 5.

Midgrade unleaded also was unchanged from Friday, at $2.94 a gallon, while premium was down 1 cent, to $3.05 a gallon, according to AAA, of Heathrow, Fla.

Diesel fuel was down an average of 1 cent, to $3.08 a gallon. E85 ethanol continued its decline, dropping 2 cents from Friday to $2.24 a gallon. Revised for its lower energy content, E85's adjusted average price is $2.95 a gallon.

AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report provides national average fuel prices based on data collected from as many as 85,000 filling stations nationwide.

Oil prices have declined in recent weeks as the dollar has regained strength and market analysts lessen their concerns about the vulnerability of crucial refineries in the Gulf of Mexico to tropical storms, The Associated Press reported.

Drivers in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, are seeing the nation's highest pump prices, with regular unleaded at $3.69 a gallon. Drivers in Cliffwood Beach, N.J., are seeing the nation's lowest prices for regular unleaded at $2.39 a gallon, according to www.GasPriceWatch.com. The Web site relies on volunteers to report gasoline prices at pumps nationwide.

**The BTU-adjusted price of E-85 is the nationwide average price of E-85 adjusted to reflect the lower energy content as expressed in British Thermal Units - and hence miles per gallon - available in a gallon of E-85 as compared to the same volume of conventional gasoline.
