About 12,200 German VW workers agree to leave

FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen, the world's fourth biggest carmaker, has about 12,200 German workers that have signed up to leave the company, Chief Executive Bernd Pischetsrieder said on Thursday.

He said about 2,500 workers had signed voluntary termination packages, with a further 6,000 that had signed early retirement but still work at the company.

Another 3,700 are already in a so-called "passive phase" of early retirement in which they no longer work at Volkswagen.
