VW will launch Golf SUV in 2007

Wolfsburg plant will build all-wheel-drive car

Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen will add a medium SUV to the Golf family in 2007.

Unlike the larger VW Touareg premium SUV that is manufactured in Bratislava, Slovakia, the Golf SUV will be built at the carmaker's main plant in Wolfsburg.

To save money, the all-wheel-drive Golf will share as many engines and modules as possible with the Golf hatchback and the high-roof version of the car, the Golf Plus.

As a result of the component sharing, the basic Golf SUV could cost less than 24,000 euros. But that still would make it about 3,000 euros more expensive than the 4Motion version of the Golf with permanent all-wheel drive that debuted earlier this year.
