Mercedes message on new S class: Safest car in the world

Stuttgart. The sixth generation Mercedes S class will have its premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt in 2005 and will be available on the market a month later.

The new S class will be positioned as the "safest car in the world." Thanks to a combination of a new active safety system and optimum results in crash performance tests, the S class should be even safer than the Maybach, says Mercedes sources.

Nine engines are planned, from a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 245hp to an AMG version with more than 600hp.

The new S class will have a starting price of around 60,000 euros and an annual worldwide target of 80,000 units, according to sources.
