'A spirit of teamwork'

Ernie Breech was often a "cover boy" in the nation's business press. Bob Finlay, who later was editor (1965-74) of Automotive News, wrote a profile of Breech for Forbes magazine in 1947.

Finlay's piece was headlined "Tomorrow's Leaders," which was prophetic. It was 1947, and Breech was just beginning to pull Ford out of the pit.

Finlay summed up Breech's management style this way: "He believes that the greatest thing business lost in growing big was the close touch with its workers. To regain that touch, he believes management - he prefers to call it leadership - must share its desires and visions with workers.

"One of Breech's cardinal principles is that no man can do a job by himself. Building a spirit of teamwork ... is fundamental to business success."
