Parry-Jones parting with special Miata

When Ford transferred Group Vice President Richard Parry-Jones to Great Britain in November, it meant that he'd have to leave something special behind: a 10th Anniversary Mazda Miata -- serial number 1 out of 7,500 produced.

So, Parry-Jones put the car on eBay and auctioned it off, with the proceeds, $22,700, going to United Way's Sept. 11th Fund for victims of the terrorist attacks. The auction ended Friday night.

"Left-hand drive federal Miatas are not really compatible with UK roads and laws," Parry-Jones said. "So, after months of denial, I have finally faced up to the harsh truth that I must sell my beautiful Miata.

"But you can rest assured that it will soon be replaced with a Miata in the UK -- my biggest regret is that I know it won't be quite so 'special' as #1 of 7,500 of the 10th anniversary edition."

Parry-Jones is Ford Motor's group vice president of product development and chief technical officer.
