New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. ended production of the Chevrolet Prizm on Thursday, Dec. 13. The Prizm began its production run Nov. 14, 1988, as the Geo Prizm. According to NUMMI, 998,580 Prizms have been built. Production of the Pontiac Vibe will begin Jan. 7. The last Corolla of the year was built Dec. 12.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. halted production of the Toyota Corolla and Camry Solara on Dec. 6 and 7, respectively. The Cambridge, Ontario, plant is closed until Jan. 2 in preparation for the start of Toyota Matrix production.
AutoAlliance Inc. closed its Flat Rock, Mich., plant Dec. 7. The plant, which builds the Mazda 626 and Mercury Cougar, will be down until mid-January for the installation of a conveyor system.
Three Ford Motor Co. plants are closed this week. Plants in Avon Lake, Ohio, and St. Thomas, Ontario, are closed until Jan. 2 because of slow sales. The Cuautitlan, Mexico, plant is closed until Jan. 14 for plant modification.
