Slow sales shutter GM, Ford plants

  • Ten assembly plants will be down this week because of slow sales. This is the most since the week that ended Feb. 3, when 12 plants were down. Two of the 10 shuttered plants have been down 12 weeks each this year because of slow sales. They are General Motors' Orion Township, Mich., plant (Buick LeSabre and Park Avenue; Oldsmobile Aurora; Pontiac Bonneville) and Ford Motor Co.'s Avon Lake, Ohio, plant (Mercury Villager and Nissan Quest).

  • GM will begin building the Cadillac Escalade EXT today, Oct. 15, in Silao, Mexico. The truck is built alongside the Chevrolet Avalanche and Suburban and the GMC Yukon XL.
