Mitsubishi's Airtrek to be redesigned and renamed for the U.S. market

FRANKFURT- The Japanese version of the Airtrek is best described as a combination minivan, sport-utility and station wagon. But the U.S. version will be redesigned "more in the SUV direction" before it goes on sale next summer, said Steven Torok, Mitsubishi Motor Corp.'s senior vice president in charge of international operations.

The Airtrek also will get a new name.

The suspension and powertrain also will be changed. Asked if the vehicle would get a V-6, Torok responded: "No promises."

The vehicle will be positioned as an alternative to mid-range sport-utilities, Torok said last month at the Frankfurt auto show.

The Japan-market Airtrek offers a 2.4-liter direct-injection engine or a less expensive 2.0-liter engine.
