Happy New (model) Year!

Radio Commentary
Edward Lapham is editor of Automotive News

When I was a kid, one of the special treats of fall was when the new car models went on sale each October 1. There were a couple of dealerships in my neighborhood and they would always unveil the new models with much fanfare and hoopla.

Along the way, that changed. About two decades ago automakers stopped waiting until October to introduce new models.

Nowadays, when a vehicle is ready, it goes on sale, no matter what season.

But this is still an important time of year. From July until the first quarter next year, there are 23 new models being launched across the industry, despite the economic slowdown.

And next Monday is still the official start of the 2002 model year. So, Happy New Year!
