Ford orders Valeo object sensor

PARIS - Ford has placed a large order for an ultrasonic parking assist system from Valeo SA, of Paris, for use on two future vehicles.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Valeo expects to produce large volumes of its ultrasonic parking assist system for Ford and its Premier Automotive Group by 2005, said Thierry Morin, chairman of Valeo's management board.

The system uses sound waves from sensors mounted in a vehicle's rear bumper to detect objects when the vehicle is shifted into reverse and activate an audio warning inside the vehicle.
