Class 8 sales off 31.8% in August

The decline in Class 8 truck sales slowed in August.

Class 8 truck sales for the month totaled 11,581 units, down 31.8 percent from August 2000. But that performance was better than the 36.1 percent decline in July.

For the year to date through August, Class 8 sales are down 38.1 percent. That was better than the 38.8 percent decline for the year-to-date sales at the end of July.

Overall medium- and heavy-truck sales for August totaled 29,734 units, down 24.2 percent from August 2000. For the year to date, medium- and heavy-truck sales stood at 243,716 units, down 27.6 percent from the same period in 2000.

When Class 1-3 trucks are added to the totals, sales in August fell 3.3 percent to 735,748 units compared to August 2000. For the year to date, truck sales totaled 5.82 million units, down 5.2 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Sales leader Freightliner Corp., saw its August sales fall 19.4 percent to 7,474 units. For the year to date, Freightliner sales are down 26.4 percent to 55,884 units.
