Automakers inspire hope

Sept. 21 - By now, everyone knows the horrible, sickening images associated with the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

But there are other images that give us hope, including many from the auto industry. There are workers at a Porsche factory standing with their heads bowed next to an idle assembly line during a moment of reverence.

And the image of a young woman setting her candle among hundreds of others at a candlelight vigil outside a Volkswagen plant.

Or the look of shiny Ford trucks being donated to the rescue operation.

Perhaps the most inspiring image was top auto execs and labor leaders meeting with Administration officials to discuss ways to bolster the industry's future. That's an image worth remembering.
