CAFE will work only in emergency

To the Editor:

The government is debating an increase in the corporate average fuel economy standards.

The public is rushing to purchase cars that have enough horsepower to accelerate to 60 mph in the blink of an eye or sport-utilities that can accommodate a soccer team perhaps 5 percent of the time they are on the road.

Until we return to the days of long fuel lines and odd/even day fueling regulations or just plain run out of gas, CAFE won't be taken seriously.
