AutoAlliance International Inc. will begin production of the 2002 Mercury Cougar, Tuesday, Sept. 4. It is a rolling changeover.
New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. will begin assembling the 2002 Toyota Tacoma on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
NUMMI car and truck lines are scheduled to work overtime (both shifts) on Saturday, Sept. 8. The plant, which produces the Chevrolet Prizm and Toyota Corolla and Tacoma, is in Fremont, Calif.
Ford Motor Co. will idle its St. Thomas, Ontario, plant (Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis) this week because of slow sales. It's the second time in three weeks the plant has been shuttered.
Ford's Wixom plant resumed production on Thursday, Aug. 30, after being down since Aug. 15 because of a problem with hydraulic cooling system fans. The plant builds the Ford Thunderbird, and the Lincoln Continental, LS and Town Car.
Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing returned Aug. 27 after losing one day of production because of a strike. The plant in Normal, Ill., builds the Chrysler Sebring coupe, Dodge Stratus coupe, Mitsubishi Eclispe, Eclipse convertible and Galant.
U.S. and Canadian car and truck manufacturers will be closed today, Sept. 3, in observance of Labor Day.
U.S. cars reached 5 million on Thursday, Aug. 30. It was 28 days later than in 2000. U.S. cars are 711,744 units below last year.
