A friend remembers Heinz Prechter

To the Editor:

My family and I were deeply shocked when we learned that my longtime, very close friend Heinz Prechter had left us so tragically. Heinz and Keith Crain and I spent time together at auto shows and on other occasions in various parts of the world.

He was one of my two best and oldest friends in the United States. The other is Bob Lutz.

I had a standing invitation to visit Heinz at his ranch in Texas. Unfortunately, because of lack of time, we never had the occasion to do so. Now, I am terribly sorry I did not make a special effort to spend some time with Heinz.

I am reminded of probably one of the most unusual experiences that Heinz had in his very busy life. It was when I persuaded him to participate with me in the 1987 Mille Miglia, driving my BMW 328, which, incidentally, I had purchased from Lutz in 1974 when he left BMW as vice president.

My wife and daughter and I will miss Heinz and will pray for him.
