DETROIT - After forcing the resignation of Chairman Robert Stempel last week, some General Motors board members themselves may be asked to vacate the board as part of a continuing remake of the company.

At its meeting today in New York, the GM board is expected to give President Jack Smith the added responsibility of CEO, replacing Stempel.

John Smale is expected to take Stempel's other post, chairman of the board. Smale, former chairman of Procter & Gamble, led the board putsch that resulted in a management and board shakeup last April and Stempel's resignation Oct. 26.

Roger Smith, Stempel's predecessor as chairman, is one of seven directors who will be asked to step down, according to a source with ties to the board.
