Big dealers getting bigger; Republic is biggest of all

DETROIT - Factory-engineered dealership consolidation and a trend toward publicly owned dealer groups are helping the big auto retailers get even bigger.

Blazing the trail for publicly owned dealerships is Republic Industries (Editor's note: Now AutoNation), headed by H. Wayne Huizenga. It has acquired eight dealership groups and is purchasing 11 more. The 19 groups have a total of 76 dealerships.
