Ford Motor Co. last week sweetened the 24-month lease terms on the Ford Taurus sedan in its bid to retain the U.S. car sales crown.

Interest rates on 24-month lease contracts dropped one percentage point to 5.5 percent. Customers get $750 cash. The program began Dec. 20 and continues through Jan. 4. Other incentives are detailed on Page 30.

At the end of November, Taurus led the Honda Accord in sales by nearly 15,000 units. Taurus won the U.S. car-sales race in 1992 and 1993.
