Motor turns Volvo V60 into 4wd plug-in hybrid
What: eRAD for plug-in hybrids
Innovation: Volvo wanted a plug-in hybrid version of the V60 wagon, so the automaker added Magna’s electric rear-axle drive, or eRAD, which uses an electric motor to power the car’s rear wheels. The car’s diesel powertrain drives the front wheels. Drivers can choose electric power, diesel or a combination. This method economically combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor to create a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
