WINNER: New methods cut cost of hydroformed parts
Schuler Inc., Hydroforming Division
What: Hydroforming and global die standardization
Innovation: The cost of hydroforming — using high-pressure water to form strong, lightweight parts — is considered high because it needs three dies, for r&d, prototyping and production. Schuler’s method cuts costs and part weight by standardizing processes and tools. The result is one process and one die for one part globally. Also, the process allows a die to fit more than 90 percent of presses globally.
