Volkswagen CrossBlue concept

Engine: Plug-in hybrid with 2.0-liter diesel
What's cool: The concept is a plug-in diesel hybrid, something VW has not produced. The cost of those two powertrain technologies may make it uneconomical to build, but it suggests VW is thinking about diesel and electrified versions of the crossover. On the headrests of the two front seats, VW installed docks for iPad Mini tablet computers.
Will it be built? A production version is expected, though executives say it would not appear until the 2015 model year at the earliest. VW's U.S. dealers have long clamored for a three-row crossover to compete with heavyweights such as the Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot, and both U.S. and German executives seem to think this is it.
