Segment: Large SUV
Drivetrain option(s): RWD/4WD
With the most thorough redesign in the venerable SUV's history, the 2019 G class is bigger, lighter and more luxurious. Almost every visible exterior and interior part is new. Mercedes upgraded performance in all areas: on-road handling, off-road performance, passenger comfort and telematics. The 2019 G class is 2.1 inches longer and 4.8 inches wider. With more extensive use of lightweight materials, such as ultra-high-strength steel and aluminum, the SUV has shed 375 pounds. There is more leg, shoulder and elbow room for both front- and second-row passengers — including 5.9 more inches of legroom for rear-seat passengers. The suspension — a double-wishbone front axle combined with a rigid rear axle — is the result of work between engineers at Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG. The base G class for the U.S. will continue to be the G550 model with a carryover turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. A new nine-speed automatic with a torque converter specifically adapted for off-road requirements also helps lower fuel consumption.
The 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 is powered by a 4.0-liter biturbo V-8 engine, good for 577 hp and a 9-speed automatic transmission. AMG-exclusive details include an AMG-specific radiator grille and AMG bumper with large side air inlets, Mercedes says. There's also flared front and rear wheel arches and standard metallic paint. The high performance SUV will reach the U.S. by the end of the year.
