ENVIRONMENTAL: Joerg Pohlman, Managing director, SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers

SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers, the joint venture formed by BMW and SGL Group, built a factory in Moses Lake, Wash., primarily because of the availability of hydropower from the Colorado River to run the plant.
Pohlman, 49, a member of the BMW i project since 2008, heads the operation, which makes the carbon fiber used in the i3 battery electric compact and the coming i8 hybrid sports car.
About 20 percent of the i3 is made of carbon fiber, and about 10 percent of that is recycled from scraps cut off when the sheets are produced.
