The seventh-generation Golf hatchback will arrive in the United States in August 2014. The car is up to 200 pounds lighter than its predecessor, with increased use of high-strength, hot-formed steel. Buyers will choose between a turbocharged 1.8-liter and a 2-liter EA288 diesel engine. The Golf will use Volkswagen Groupís modular toolkit for cars with transverse-mounted engines, called MQB, which will provide the underpinnings for the Jetta, Passat and Tiguan when they undergo a full redesign.
