|Lexus RC coupe|
The Lexus RC coupe unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show will come in a couple different variations, including a hybrid model. |
The powerful version, the RC 350, gets a 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RC 350, spy photo above, delivers 314 hp at 6,400 rpm. It is based on the LF-CC coupe concept from the 2012 Paris auto show and will use the IS/GS platform.
The high-performance RC-F version debuting at the 2014 Detroit auto show in January will have a 460-hp V-8 under the hood, which Lexus hopes will steal sales from the BMW M3.
To increase rigidity and improve performance, engineers outfitted the RC with extra-thick rocker panels. Underbody aerodynamics also aid handling. The RC uses a double-wishbone front suspension and a multilink suspension at the rear. The RC rides on the same platform as the GS sedan and is just as wide. But it is 1.1 inches wider than the IS, 1.4 inches lower and 2.7 inches shorter in wheelbase.
The RC is expected to sit near the top of a revised Lexus lineup. Lexus executives want another halo offering to polish the brandís sports image.
