BMW plans more Mini output, 10 models

BMW said it is boosting Mini production capacity and confirmed that it will increase the lineup to as many as 10 vehicles. The brand sells six now.

Sources have told Automobilwoche, a German sibling publication to Automotive News, that Mini will add a five-door station wagon, a van and possibly a notchback sedan by 2020.

The station wagon will be based on a new BMW Group front-wheel-drive platform that debuts with the second-generation Mini Cooper hardtop in 2014. The van will share a platform with the Mini Countryman.

A coupe version of the four-door Countryman crossover, the Paceman, will be launched in the United States in the first quarter of 2013. It debuted as a concept at the 2011 Detroit auto show.

Harald Krueger, BMW's board member with responsibility for Mini, said Mini production plans focus on the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

BMW will invest $388 million in its United Kingdom operations by the end of 2015. The company said last month that it is considering building vehicles at Mitsubishi's NedCar plant in the Netherlands, where Mitsubishi is ending production at the end of the year.
