DETROIT -- General Motors will advertise during the Super Bowl XLV broadcast in February, The Wall Street Journal reported today, citing people familiar with the matter.

GM pulled out of Super Bowl advertising in 2009, as the automaker headed toward bankruptcy. Chrysler Group and Ford Motor Co. also sat out the game that year.

Chrysler was the only domestic automaker to advertise during this year’s Super Bowl. It ran a male-oriented commercial, called “Man’s Last Stand,” for the Dodge Charger R/T.

The Journal said Hyundai Motor America, Kia Motors America Inc., Volkswagen AG and Audi AG also plan ads for next year’s game, which will be Feb. 6 in Cowboys Stadium near Dallas.

GM’s new marketing chief, Joel Ewanick, is known to favor advertising during major national events. While running marketing at Hyundai, he launched the automaker’s successful Assurance campaign during the 2009 Super Bowl.

Thirty-second ad spots are selling for $2.8 million to $3 million for next year’s game, the Journal said.
