LOS ANGELES -- Toyota will ramp up production of six of its best-selling models over the next three months.

"We see a turnaround coming," Bob Carter, general manager of Toyota Division, said during a conference call Tuesday.

North American production will increase by 65,000 units over the previous plan for the three-month period as Toyota boosts output of its Camry, Corolla, Sienna, RAV4, Tacoma and Tundra models, Carter said. Toyota's North American total production in June, July and August of 2008 was 349,835 units, including Lexus models.

The division's sales fell 39.5 percent in May compared with the same month last year, to 130,566 units. But May volume was 21.0 percent higher than in April.

Carter told Automotive News that Toyota's retail sales were 25 percent higher in May than the month before.

"There was an improvement on the retail side of the business for the entire industry," he said.

Carter did not specify how much production would increase for each individual vehicle. All six posted a sales increase in May over April, with the Corolla up 27.2 percent for the month and the Camry up 23.7 percent.

Carter said overall supply for Toyota Division has fallen to 41 days from 62 days on May 1.

"We may be witnessing a slight rebound in the industry," he said.

Toyota's year-on-year sales decline in May was worse than the declines for Chevrolet, Ford and Nissan. Only Honda Division, down 42.0 percent for the month, fared worse among the top five brands. Through the first five months of 2009, Toyota Division was down 38.0 percent to 543,786.
