Porsche sets Panamera base price at $89,800

Porsche will price the new Panamera four-seat luxury sedan starting at $89,800 for the rear-drive S model with a 4.8-liter, 400-hp V-8 engine.

The all-wheel-drive Panamera 4S has the same engine and will start at $93,800. The range-topping $132,600 Panamera Turbo has a twin-turbocharged, 500-hp, 4.8-liter V-8. Porsche says shipping charges will be close to the $975 it charges for the Cayenne SUV, produced in the Leipzig, Germany, plant that also will make the Panamera.

The Panamera will compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLS, priced at $71,575 to $97,175, and the Audi A7, due in 2010. Last fall BMW canceled development of a model based on the Concept CS that would have competed in the segment, citing the economic downturn.

The Panamera, which goes on sale in the United States on Oct. 17, will debut at the Shanghai auto show in April.
