Next Focus could top 40 mpg

DETROIT — The powertrain in the Lincoln C concept signals that Ford could improve fuel economy in the next-generation Ford Focus by as much as 23 percent.

The Lincoln C is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter, 180-hp, four-cylinder EcoBoost engine and a dual-clutch six-speed transmission that Ford says will deliver 43 mpg at highway speeds. The current U.S. Focus has a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with highway fuel economy of up to 35 mpg.

The Lincoln C is built on Ford's next-generation Focus platform. A new global Focus is slated to go on sale in the United States in late 2010. Ford executives aren't commenting on the next Focus' fuel economy, but they say there is serious intent for the Lincoln C powertrain. If the powertrain shows up in the Focus, it likely would be for a performance or premium model.
