MUNICH (Thomson Financial) -- Volkswagen unit Audi is building a plant in Changchun, northern China, to assemble its new compact SUV, the Q5, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported, citing unspecified China-based sources.

Production of the vehicle is due to start in August 2009, the newspaper said in an extract from an article in Friday's edition.

An Audi spokesman declined to comment.

The Q5 is due to be launched in Europe this summer and in the US at the start of 2009.
