VW recalls 410,000 Passats

Volkswagen Group of America Inc. is recalling every gasoline-powered VW Passat sold in the United States from 1999 to 2005 -- some 410,000 cars.

VW said today that a heat shield under some Passats with automatic transmissions could be damaged. Dealers will inspect the heat shield, which usually is near the catalytic converter, and will install an additional heat shield if necessary.

Some Passats also may have a faulty fuel line that VW will replace, the automaker said. Those cars have 1.8-liter turbocharged engines. VW says some all-wheel-drive Passats may have damaged fuel tank ventilation valves.

No accidents or injuries have been reported because of the problems, VW said, adding that it plans to begin notifying owners of affected vehicles on May 30.
