Toyota iQ will beat Prius in fuel efficiency

GENEVA – Toyota's new iQ minicar will be its most fuel-efficient model. The iQ will have CO2 emissions of 99 grams per kilometer.

Like all automakers that sell cars in Europe, Toyota is under pressure from European lawmakers to cut its CO2 emissions. The European Commission wants to introduce a regulation to cut average fleet CO2 emissions of new cars in Europe to 120g/km by 2012 from about 160g/km now.

Currently, the Prius gasoline hybrid has the lowest CO2 emissions of all Toyota cars. Its CO2 emissions are 104g/km.

The production iQ was being unveiled at the Geneva auto show today. Ford of Europe also will announce in Geneva that it will sell a version of its new Fiesta small car with CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km.

Toyota will start selling the iQ in Japan by the end of the year and in Europe next January. The carmaker plans to sell 80,000 iQs a year in Europe. It will be priced at about 13,000 euros.

The 2985mm-long iQ will be Toyota's smallest model, positioned below the Aygo minicar.

The 3+1 iQ seats two adults in the front, one adult in the back and a child behind the driver.
