ReprintsGM could share Volt technology among brands

SAN FRANCISCO -- General Motors told dealers during its annual all-brand meeting here today that if it produces the Chevrolet Volt, other GM brands may get a variant of the battery-powered car. Lynn Thompson, owner of Thompson Sales Co. in Springfield, Mo., said after the meeting that GM indicated the Volt's powertrain could be applicable to other brands. "It was just a passing comment, but my eyes popped out. I would hope they would share the wealth a little bit." Thompson sells Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Cadillac and Saab. He says other dealers agree with him that GM should share the E-Flex technology as it shares other engines among its brands. E-Flex, which would power the Volt, uses lithium ion battery power to propel the car via an electric motor for a limited range, with a small engine used only to recharge the batteries after 40 miles. GM is working toward producing the Volt by 2010 and plans to test prototypes this summer. |
GM also outlined its marketing plan for hybrids and other green technology such as E85, said dealer David Herndon, owner of Herndon Chevrolet in Lexington, S.C. "Their desire is for GM to take the lead in being green," he said. "They want GM to be the worldwide leader in that area." |
