Fiat to halt production at Alfa’s main plant

TURIN -- Fiat group will give its main Alfa Romeo plant for one last chance to improve quality or face closure, company sources say.

The plant in Pomigliano d'Arco, southern Italy, will close for two months starting in January.

The temporary closure will allow Alfa to upgrade manufacturing facilities and retrain production workers who make the Alfa Romeo 147, 159, 159 Sportwagon and GT premium sports cars.

The upgrade is important if Alfa wants to reach its 2010 sales goal of 300,000 cars, up from an expected 152,000 this year.
